Each unit type possessses different abilities. Deploy units in locations to best take advantage of those abilities. Gil is required to deploy a unit, as well as to increase one's level. Gil is obtained by defeating monsters. Bonus gil, based on the amount of crystals and gil lift in your party's coffers, can also be earned upon the completion of each wave. The more gil left at the end of a wave, the larger the bonus.
You cannot deploy units on top of obstacles. In addition, Soldiers, White Monks, Fencers, Berserkers and Thieves are unable to perform actions from beyond any obstacle, while larger obstacles can prevent the ranged attacks of Black Mages, Time Mages, Hunters and Archers. Obstacles vary with each stage, from trees and shrubs to boulders.
You can increase the attributes of your units by placing one of three types of crystals nearby. Units can receive the benifits of up to four crystals of the same type. However, regardless of the number of blue crystals in the vicinity, a unit's attack range can never exceed 230. At the beginning of each wave, you will receive 30 strategy points. Strategy points are lost each time you conduct one of the following actions:
- Deploy a unit
- Place a crystal
- Increase a unit's level
- Energize a crystal
